Site of the Month: February
This month’s site is a WebGL game based on Google Maps. It features a cube with Google Maps of various locations around the world on the six sides. A ball is dropped onto the map and the user moves the cube to navigate the ball towards markers on the map.
Sounds simple, but there’s a catch! The buildings on the map are 3D, meaning the ball can only take to the roads around the area to reach the marker. Any rivers on the map are also blocked, forcing the ball to use bridges.
The roads even feature traffic, which slows down the ball if it happens to get caught up in the queue of cars. Users can even go ‘indoors’, dropping between levels of a shopping centre, giving a 3D edge to the cube itself.
The game was inspired by a video of a real-life cube map made by Google.
